JOHN LEWIS EVANS
Lewis Evans was the second born child of Edgar and Ida Evans and resided in Sun, WV. He was the father of one daughter, Greta Evans who resided in Richmond, VA.
Below is the obituary recorded in the Raleigh Register, Beckley, WV, Friday, January 14, 1966.

Evans, John Lewis, age 56, of Sun. Funeral Services will be conducted at 1 p.m. in the Rising Sun Baptist Church with Bishop Allen Wilson officiating. Burial will follow in the Sun Cemetery.

Greta was the only child and daughter of the late John Lewis Evans and Amanda Pleasant Evans and resided in Roanoke, VA.

WHEREAS, Greta Evans of Roanoke, well known and widely respected in the community for her activism and community affairs television broadcasts died February 22, 2004; and
WHEREAS, a native of West Virginia, Greta Evans grew up in Roanoke, graduated at the top of her class from Lucy Addison High School and moved to New York to attend City College; and
WHEREAS, Greta returned to Roanoke in the early 1980's and worked in radio until 1983, when she was hired by WSLS, to write and host a community affairs program "Reaching Out", and
WHEREAS, served WSLS as Community Affairs Coordinator, reporter, and host of "Datebook" in addition to her popular work on "Reaching Out", and
WHEREAS, in 1985 Greta Evans wrote the narration for Henry St.!, a musical that raised funds for the restoration for Henry Street area and the Dumas Center for Artistic and Cultural Development; and
WHEREAS, Greta Evans introduced local schoolchildren to African customs and lifestyles; volunteered for the Sister Cities Program, working with Roanoke's Sister City Kisumu, Kenya; and was involved with the Harrison Musuem of African American culture; and
WHEREAS, Greta Evans' activism on issues of equality, education and Roanoke community affairs won her the respect and affections of the organizations and community she served, now therefore be it
RESOLVED by the House of Delegates, the Senate concurring, that the General Assembly hereby note with great sadness the loss of an exceptional citizen of Roanoke, and be it
RESOLVED further, that the Clerk of the House of Delegates prepare a copy of this Resolution for presentation to the family of Greta Evans as an expression of the respect in which her memory is held by the members of the General Assembly.
